How a breakaway works
A plastic connector at the back of the neck holds under normal wear and pops apart when the lanyard is pulled hard. If the cord catches in machinery, a door, or another person’s hand, the lanyard comes off the wearer instead of tightening around their neck. The two halves click back together afterwards, so it is not a single-use part.
Where it is required rather than optional
Most school districts mandate breakaway lanyards for students and staff. Hospitals, laboratories, warehouses and any site with moving machinery generally do the same, and it frequently appears in workplace safety policies as a written requirement. If you are buying for any of those, check your own policy before ordering — a non-breakaway lanyard may simply not be accepted on site.
