Why order the two together

Buying a lanyard and a reel separately means two purchase orders, two proofs, two lead times and someone clipping several hundred reels onto several hundred lanyards by hand. Ordering them as a set removes all of that. It also guarantees the two match — the reel attachment is fitted to the lanyard at production, so the colors and hardware finish line up instead of being whatever was in the box.

Multi-day conferences where attendees scan into sessions. New-hire onboarding, where every starter needs a complete credential on day one. Hospitals, schools and secure sites where staff badge through doors constantly and a plain lanyard would not survive the year. Anywhere a credential is both worn and used, rather than just worn.

Specifying a set

Start with the lanyard width — 3/4″ and 1″ carry the weight of a reel most comfortably and give you the largest print area. Then choose the decoration: silkscreen for one or two spot colors, dye sublimation for full-color artwork. Add a breakaway safety release if the sets are for a school, a clinic or a production environment. Most sets here ship with a black reel, which sits neutrally against any lanyard color.
